The Story
Dhido Ranjha was the youngest and most beloved son of a wealthy family in Takht Hazara. After a dispute with his brothers over land, he left home and wandered until he reached the banks of the Chenab River. There, seeking passage across, he encountered Heer - the beautiful daughter of a local chief named Chuchak.
It was love at first sight. Ranjha took employment as a herdsman for Heer's family, and the two began a secret romance. They would meet by the river, their love growing deeper with each passing day. But their happiness was not to last.
Separation and Tragedy
Heer's uncle Kaido discovered their relationship and arranged her marriage to Saida Khera from another village. Heartbroken, Ranjha became a jogi (ascetic) and wandered the land in search of his beloved. After years of separation, he finally found her and, with the help of a sympathetic king, secured permission for their union.
But fate had other plans. On their wedding day, Heer's uncle poisoned her. When Ranjha learned of her death, he too consumed the poison, choosing death over life without his beloved. They were buried together, their love finally united in death.
Legacy in Culture
The story was immortalized in the 18th century by the Sufi poet Waris Shah, whose "Heer Waris Shah" is considered one of the greatest works of Punjabi literature. The tale has been adapted into numerous films, stage plays, and songs.
